A note from the outgoing PTA President

A note from the outgoing PTA President, Claudia Rosario:

The PTA would like to thank everyone who supported and volunteered towards our efforts through the 2014-2015 school year. This past year has brought forth many new and exciting happenings at PS5 through the PTA. With the help of some of our amazing parents, we were able to once again offer an exciting and diverse After School Program, which consist of classes such as soccer, breakdance, yoga, dance, and art. In the spring we made some new additions such as Bricks for Kidz and Tennis. In addition, with the help of our wonderful collaborator, Nimbus Dance Works, we were able to offer an in-school movement program for all the 2nd grade students. At the end of the program, Nimbus, and the students from both the after school program and the in-school program, put together a great performance for the community. We are so fortunate and humbled to have such a great opportunity to have our children learn through the art of dance, all thanks to Nimbus Dance Works and its supporters.

In addition to the programs held at PS5, the PTA has focused on bringing our school community closer with events such as the Mary Benson Park Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, our first Holiday Bazaar, the Mets Game Fundraiser, and our first Family Movie Social Night. The PTA has also set forth several fundraisers such as the Breakfast at Applebees, the chocolate lollipop sales, and the Mixed Bag Design fundraisers to help provide scholarships and an opportunity for all students to participate in the After School Programs. The PTA has also focused on building the relationship between the parents and educators with events such as the teacher appreciation lunches and breakfasts in addition to purchasing their book fair wish lists. There has also been a wonderful outreach to local businesses for support that Evelyn Chan led throughout the year. Their substantial monetary donation went towards helping fund the yearly Spring Carnival.

The current PTA Executive Board is very proud of its accomplishment this past year. As we finish the school year, we will now pass the torch to a new board. I would like to thank Yesenia Carpio (VP), Melissa Bridda (VP), and Alison Kepic (Recording Secretary) for all their time and dedication this past year. They, including myself, will be stepping down. Silvia Santiago, our current Treasurer will stay on board for another term, but I would also like to show my appreciation to her as well. With this being said, I would like to introduce the new PTA Executive Board: Cory Seminowicz (President), Nicole Moulaison (VP), Evelyn Chan (VP), Sarah Welt (Correspondence Secretary), and Laura Gosa (Recording Secretary). I’ve had the pleasure of working with these wonderful ladies and feel very confident that the future of the PTA at PS5 is in very good hands! Both boards have the same views and the new board will continue to work toward our same common goals. Your new PTA board will be kicking-off their planning sessions in just two weeks time. Stay tuned for more news about how you can get involved AND the PTA’s exciting plans for the 2015-2016 school year! I ask that you welcome them and show them your support. For now, I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe summer!
