How do I join?
Join the whatsapp group. https://chat.whatsapp.com/EfNxmY62ZCu4DZ9Usyb42P
When do we meet?
The goal is to meet once a week. Fridays 5pm in the school garden. If it rains or gets cold again, we'll go back to Gia Gelato.
What are the rules for kids during a meetup?
Everyone plays.
If someone asks you to play them, try to say yes.
Set up the board after you finish a game.
Don’t touch other people’s pieces.
Be kind.
Can I drop off my kindergartener and come back later?
No. If they are old enough that they can be self released from CASPER, they can come and leave by themselves. But chess club is not going to take kids to the bathroom, make sure they don’t wander off, etc.
Is this part of the PTA’s afterschool program?
No, though we’re very grateful for the support of the PTA. After the ASP is re-established, we will see if it continues to make sense to meet weekly or to transition to a tournament-support group, booster club, or online organization.
How can I help?
Show up, teach kids to play, learn to play yourself, volunteer to bring snacks, help set up before 4, help clean up after class. If you have a good place to play after it gets cold, that would be great
Who is running this? Is he good at chess?
So far, me (maybe you too?). Jon Huang. No he’s not! Contact me via the group, at 646-360-0320 or chess@jonhuang.com

Theatre with Speranza Theatre Company (K and 1st)
Thanks to the support of the PS5 Administration and PTA, students have the exciting opportunity to work with Speranza Theatre Company right in their classrooms. Through theater games and creative writing, students are encouraged to express their unique voices and measure success by their own growth—not by test scores or grades. This enriching experience fosters creativity and provides cultural exposure that students will carry with them for years to come.
Speranza Theatre Company is a nonprofit, women-led organization and member of the New Jersey Theater Alliance. Committed to equality, inclusion, and collaboration, Speranza offers professional performances, free readings, and educational programs that inspire a lifelong love of the arts. The PS5 PTA proudly raises funds to support this program—keep an eye out for fundraiser announcements this fall! If you'd like to join the theater fundraising and events committee, please email jerseycityps5pta@gmail.com.
Dance with Segunda Quimbamba Folkloric Center, Pre K
As part of our early childhood enrichment initiatives, Pre-K students at PS5 participate in a dynamic dance program led by the Segunda Quimbamba Folkloric Center. This program introduces young learners to the rhythms, movements, and cultural traditions of Afro-Puerto Rican dance and music in a fun, age-appropriate way. Through movement and music, students build coordination, confidence, and cultural awareness while engaging in a joyful and meaningful artistic experience.

The PS5 PTA proudly partners with the school to host the annual Book Fair, creating an exciting opportunity for students to discover new books and develop a lifelong love of reading. This event not only supports literacy but also helps raise funds to provide more resources for our classrooms. Through our Books for the Classroom initiative, families can further support their child's learning environment by contributing to classroom needs, whether it's supplies, snacks, or special projects—strengthening the connection between home and school.

To enrich the middle school experience, the PS5 PTA helps bring in guest speakers who offer real-world insights and inspiration tied to classroom projects. These invited experts—from authors and scientists to artists and community leaders—connect academic subjects to practical applications, encouraging students to think critically, ask questions, and explore new ideas. These sessions help deepen learning and spark curiosity, making student projects more meaningful and impactful.
-
The PS5 PTA is committed to fostering an inclusive and informed school community through a series of thoughtful workshops. These sessions cover important topics such as internet safety, helping students and families navigate the digital world responsibly, as well as anti-racism in education, which encourages equity, empathy, and respect in our classrooms. Additionally, workshops on neurodiversity promote greater understanding and acceptance of different learning styles and neurological differences, supporting a more compassionate and supportive environment for all learners.
-
PS5 offers a variety of engaging school assemblies that spark curiosity, creativity, and important conversations for students of all ages. These include exciting science experiences like visits from the Planetarium, Liberty Science Center (LSC), the Rutgers Science Bus, and interactive performances by Lizard Guy and a magician. Programs like Sk8 4 Life promote wellness and resilience through storytelling and skateboarding, while our Middle School assemblies focus on critical topics such as anti-racism and internet safety, helping students grow as thoughtful, informed members of the community.
